Industry Quality Initiative: Guizhou Issues Guidelines for Safe and Ecological Spring Tea Production

The Guizhou Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has issued an official quality and safety manifesto for the 2022 spring season, establishing zero-tolerance standards for banned agrochemicals and mandating green harvesting protocols.

1. The Cleanest Cup: Guizhou’s Ecological Standard

Guizhou continues to enforce China’s most rigorous provincial tea safety standards:

  • A total ban on 128 chemical pesticides and weedkillers—substantially exceeding national statutory requirements;
  • Mandatory testing of incoming fresh leaf deliveries at all cooperative processing facilities;
  • Immediate revocation of geographical indication licenses and enterprise certifications for any non-compliant producer.

2. Clean Workshop Protocols

Guidelines require rigorous daily sanitation of continuous fixation machines, stainless steel rolling pans, and automated sorting belts to prevent mechanical contamination and preserve clean, grassy leaf aromatics.

3. Protecting Smallholder Livelihoods

Provincial officials noted that Guizhou’s uncompromising safety reputation is its primary competitive advantage, allowing its high-mountain green and black teas to command premium prices across domestic and export markets.
