The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations recently officially recognized the Anxi Tieguanyin Tea Cultural System in Fujian as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS). With this designation, China’s tea-related GIAHS sites have expanded to three, alongside the Pu’er Ancient Tea Agro-System in Yunnan and the Fuzhou Jasmine Tea and Tea Culture System.
Unlike conventional cultural heritage designations that focus primarily on physical monuments or isolated folk performances, GIAHS honors dynamic, living agrarian systems where traditional human communities have harmonized with their native ecosystems over centuries. The Anxi system showcases exceptional terrace stone construction, indigenous tea cultivar conservation, and the world-renowned mid-oxidation shaking and roasting craft that defines Tieguanyin.
These international recognitions celebrate ancestral agricultural wisdom, providing scientific models for contemporary agroecology, climate adaptation, and the sustainable preservation of ancient tea landscapes worldwide.
